Description and documentation
The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes abhaya as an open, raised-hand gesture expressing protection and fearlessness. It appears in historical Buddhist iconography and other Indian traditions. The icon isolates the hand from a complete depiction of a figure. It is neither a talisman nor a promise of protective effects.
